Saturday saw the first unanimous election of a Southern Area Officer in the history of the national union of students for Ireland. The Union of Students’ in Ireland (USI) represents over 250,000 students across the 32 Counties of Ireland. Kris McElhinney, from Passage East Co. Waterdord was elected to direct the affairs of southern students as Southern Area Officer In the 50th year of USI, Kris will be actively involved in leading and energizing the a range of campaigns including lobbying the Oireachtas (Parliament) for affordable better funding for institutions of higher education, action on student accommodation, and better support services for students. Currently serving as President in the University College Cork. Mr. McElhinney is not unaccustomed to student politics having previously served as Societies President while pursing the final year of Undergraduate and sitting on the board of the Irish National Society Awards (BICS). A body which had previously recognised him as the best designer in the 2008 term.
